Kendleshire golfer Andrew Sherborne and Hamptworth's David Hutton took a share of the lead at the SkyCaddie PGA Fourball Championship, supported by Sunderland, after firing a first-round 10-under-par 62.
The duo, who finished third in the west region qualifier, were inspirational around the turn with a four-hole run of birdies, and are co-leaders with Essex's Andrew Pestell and Jason Levermore at Fulford Golf Club in York.
Two shots further back on eight under are David Brunton and Jon Cheetham, Paul Bagshaw and Craig Swinburn, Michael Nesbit and George Cowan, Nicholas Baron and Steven Holden, and Craig Cowper and Gary Marks, who were called up at the last minute following the withdrawal of another pair.
Sherborne, 47, played for 20 years on the European Tour, winning two titles, and was the leading amateur at the Open in 1984. He showed his class in Yorkshire, contributing to a flawless round with birdies on the first, second, sixth, seventh, eighth, ninth, 10th, 15th, 16th and 18th.
Despite that score, Sherborne was disappointed he and Hutton missed chances to be even lower under par.
"We had lots of chances but it's a tricky day and we didn't take them all," he said. "It's not easy out there.
"We missed a few on the front nine which was a bit disappointing. But you can always say you could have played better, can't you?
"So we'll take that. Everyone has a sticky patch somewhere but we had a nice finish with the last few."
Sherborne believes it is too early to be thinking about staying in front, particularly given the changeable, blustery weather.
"It's hard to be confident because you never know what's going to happen in this format and in these conditions," he added.
"But we had the run of the ball today and let's hope it lasts for two more days."
Wessex Golf Centre's Bevan and partner Ryall are also in the hunt three shots off the lead.
"We started very slowly and took a while to get going," said Bevan.
"Then I nearly holed my second shot on the seventh and that gave us a bit of lift.
"George hit it on the green in two on the par-five and we had a good strong finish with birdie, eagle."
Last year's champions, Mathew Morris and Adrian Carey, are not defending their title as a change in their playing categories makes them ineligible.
