Mike Gallagher will compete with an array of ex-Ryder Cup stars at this week's Weston Homes PGA International Seniors at Stoke by Nayland in Suffolk, spurred on by a groundswell of support from his club.
Members at the 55-year-old's Farthingstone G&CC are desperate for him to do well and put the Northamtonshire club on the map.
Gallagher will be up against some great names including Eamonn Darcy, Costantino Rocca and Gordon J Brand who recently won back to back titles in the De Vere Collection PGA Seniors Championship and Travis Perkins Woburn Masters.
Uppermost in Gallagher's targets is a high enough finish in the £175,000 event to earn passage to the second stage of European Seniors Tour qualifying school in Portugal.
"I'll be attending Tour School at the end of the season with the aim of getting a decent card so I can play more golf next year," he said.
"The members are fully behind me and really encourage me to go out there and play and that's a great feeling."
Gallagher has enjoyed a fruitful season to date, finishing runner up in the Senior PGA Professional Championship, playing in the British Senior Open at Royal Troon and making the cut at the PGA Seniors Championship at Slaley Hall.
But he needs a strong showing at the Suffolk venue to move up the Order of Merit and bypass state one of Tour School.
A former regular on the European Tour during the 70s and 80s, Gallagher travelled all over the world playing golf including spending eight out of nine winters on the Safari Tour in Africa.
He still relishes the cut and thrust of Tour golf and if he can manage a good finish in the PGA International Seniors and Q-school, Gallagher might yet just have need to pack his bags for more trips around Europe next year.
