Bolton pro Steve Parry was last but no means least as he edged out his best mate to win the latest PGA PowerPlay Golf Championship qualifier at Oulton Hall.
The Lancashire pro, who only played in the Leeds event on the spur of the moment on the invitation of James Barr, triumphed in the risk/reward format by birdieing the decisive shootout hole after his friend missed a six foot putt for victory.
In an earlier morning session 24 players had booked their place in the national final at Frilford Heath on October 17 while the 16 leading points scorers in the stableford format went through to a 9-hole afternoon session with an instant cut after eight holes and the top six going through to a shootout .
Parry, who practises at Bolton Golf Club, was lying fourth of the six qualifiers but he pipped Clive Fromant (GB Paint), Barr (Chilli Dip Golf Academy) and Andrew Turner (Knaresborough Golf Club), Mark Bradley (Chorley) and Iain Fulton (Belton Park) by driving into a greenside bunker, splashing out and holing the putt for birdie.
All the others, who had also nominated the hole as a PowerPlay which qualifies for double stableford points in the risk/reward feature of the game, could only manage a par.
"I've never played PowerPlay Golf before and it took a while to get used to but I enjoyed it and it was something different," said Parry who earlier in the season won the Welsh Open Young PGA Professional Championship.
"I only entered at the last minute because my friend Jimmy Barr was playing in it and he asked me to. He ended up missing a six foot putt for me to win so I think he wished he'd never asked me to play."
