Lower And Belcher Clinch Crown

Published in:

John Lower and Stuart Belcher won the PGA Super 60s Tournament after a final round of 67.

Professional Lower of Wollaton Park and amateur Belcher (Bransford), successfully held onto their opening-round lead and eventually claimed the £1,250 first prize by three shots.

The pair complemented each other well in the better ball tournament over two days, which is open to pairs consisting of one amateur and one professional aged over 60.

After an opening round 66 at Forest Pines Golf & Country Club Hotel in Lincolnshire the pair finished the tournament 13 under par on the 6,443-yard course.

Boyce Hill pair Graham Burroughs and Peter Keeble were second on 10 under par after a four-under-par round of 69 today, with Scot Jack Steven and his partner John Telfer and John Hudson and John Birkett a shot further back.

"We came here on Tuesday and if Tuesday's practice had counted we would have been nowhere near," said Lower, after winning on his first outing at the Super 60s.

"Stuart played fantastically well both days."

He added: "I'm only just 60, my birthday was a couple of weeks ago.

"Forest Pines is a wonderful golf course. Long may they continue to hold this event here."

Lower insisted that patience had been the key to not blowing their overnight advantage.

"We had no bogeys today. We played very patient golf," he said.

"We both played well, Stuart had a nett eagle at five and a birdie at nine.

"I had a good run on the back nine. We're delighted to win.

"It's great, you're always trying to win. We spent an hour and a half on the practice green both days."

Third-placed Hudson started with a double bogey, but four birdies on the closing holes saw him and Birkett soar up the leaderboard.

"We struggled going out but we got back to level par for the day after seven," he said.

"We were steady and picked up a birdie at 10 and then did well at the end.

"I'm very pleased, obviously I don't play that much now and don't play in many tournaments.

"It's a great tournament, it's nice for the amateurs and it's a beautiful course."
