Lower Score Gives Midlands Pair Edge

Published in:

John Lower and Stuart Belcher lead at the halfway stage of the PGA Super 60s Championship after an opening round of 66.

The Midlands duo, representing Wollaton Park, hold a one-shot lead after the first round at Forest Pines Golf & Country Club Hotel near Scunthorpe.

Nottingham professional Lower was the catalyst for the pair's charge up the leaderboard sparked by a birdie at the eighth.

Lower said: "We made a steady start, with Stuart making a birdie at three.

"We bogeyed four but I made up for it with a birdie at five and we reached the turn four under par."

That was largely because of Lower's birdie two at the eighth hole, where he struck his tee shot to 12 feet and holed his putt.

On the back nine, Lower birdied 12 and 15 before Belcher pitched and putted 16 to pick up another stroke and leave the pair seven under par going into the final round.

"We both played well and dovetailed well to get each other out of trouble," he said.

"The same again tomorrow would be very nice. You always think you've got a chance.

"I'm one of the youngsters in the field having just turned 60 and it's my first time here."

Lower and Belcher are in pole position to walk away with the £1,250 first prize, but Graham Burroughs and Peter Keeble are only a shot behind after a six-under-par round of 67.

Burroughs and Keeble, of Boyce Hill, shot up the leaderboard on the back nine as professional Burroughs birdied 11, 13, 14, 15 and 17.

"We were very supportive of each other," said Burroughs.

"If we can get to 10 under par I think that might win tomorrow. The course is excellent, it's a great course. It's playing quite long as the ball isn't rolling as far as it did last year."

Michael Grantham and Tony Bratley are a shot further back on five under par, along with Ian Richardson and Peter Beeke and Terry Squires and Ian Wright.
