Return To Form A Dun Deal

Published in:

Scotland's Craig Dun sees no reason why he can't compete at the top of the leaderboard when the Ryder Cup Wales 2010 Welsh National PGA Championship in Cardiff starts on September 3.

Dun, who is now based at Marriott St. Pierre in south Wales, has struggled in the few PGA events he has played so far this season, but believes a change of fortune is just around the corner.

"I've not had a lot of chances to play because work has been really busy at St. Pierre," Dun said.

"So in terms of playing it's been a little bit disappointing. I played the Welsh Open a couple of weeks ago and missed the cut by a shot so obviously that was a disappointment."

Dun may have seen a lack of competitive action so far this year, but that hasn't stopped him putting in the hours on the practice range.

And the Scot is sure that he will reap the benefits of his hard work once he steps onto the course at Cardiff Golf Club, where the event is being staged for the second consecutive year.

He added: "I'm hitting it well - I've just been practising and my game is coming on well.

"I'm looking to get everything in place for the tournament in a couple of week's time. I live close by now which has helped."

Dun says last season's inability to trouble winner Stephen Dodd in the event was down to a poor first round, something he aims to make amends for this time.

"I had a terrible first round last year and just managed to scrape through and make the cut," he said.

"So this year I'll be looking to get a good start and continue that for the rest of the week.

"If I manage that I don't see any reason why I can't make the top 10 or even better."

And Dun expects the birdies to come thick and fast on a course he enjoys playing.

"The course is always in good condition," Dun continued.

"There are plenty of opportunities so I'm looking forward to getting out there."

Rob Holt, Chief Executive of Ryder Cup Wales 2010, added: "We are delighted to be title sponsors of this historic event which dates back to 1904 and boasts an illustrious list of winners including former Ryder Cup captains Ian Woosnam and Brian Huggett.

"It is great to be back at Cyncoed (Cardiff) Golf Club for a second year, which will again provide a great test of golf for all the players including defending Champion, Stephen Dodd. This is the final event in the 2008 Summer of Golf programme and crowns another great year of Welsh golf."

The Welsh National PGA Championship has been won by some famous names in the past, most notably Ian Woosnam, Brian Huggett, Sid Mouland and Percy Alliss.

Dun will be competing for a share of £42,500 prize money when the event gets under way on September 3.

Last year European Tour professional Dodd romped to an eight-shot victory with a 10-under-par total, and he looks to be the man to beat once more this time.
