Jacobs Set To Use Local Knowledge

Published in:

Cumberwell Park pro John Jacobs is hoping his extensive knowledge of the Wiltshire course will be a huge advantage when the west regional qualifier for the Gulf Air International Pro-Captain Challenge, supported by BMW is held there later this month on Wednesday August 27.

Jacobs has already played in the lucrative event in Bahrain in 2005 and would relish another chance to take part.

"We won the qualifier a few years ago and went out to Bahrain, which was absolutely fantastic," he said.

"We'd love to go there again and it's a stroke of luck the qualifier is being held at our club.

"The course is set up brilliantly at the moment - it's in really good nick.

"I think how well we know the course will be a massive advantage on the day.

Knowing the greens will be important because they are quite big. And the yardages can change quite dramatically too.

"The club captain, Mark Hobbs, is very keen and has already had me out on practice rounds."

One player hoping to prevent Jacobs bagging a second trip to the Middle East is Andy Beel of Hamptworth.

He said he narrowly missed out on qualifying previously and does not want the same thing to happen again.

"We were only a couple of shots away last year which was disappointing to come so close," said Beel.

"The captain I'll be playing with this year is a pretty good player with a nine handicap I think. Hopefully we'll do well at Cumberwell and go one better this year.

"It would be fantastic to go out to Bahrain and it's a huge incentive when you're out there trying to qualify.

"I've been playing well this season and have been playing in a pro-am most weeks so I'm glad to have found some recent form in time for this event."

The winners of the qualifier on Wednesday 27 August will book their place on a luxury trip to the Middle East at the end of the year, which begins by being chauffeur driven to the airport and includes a stay in a five-star hotel with the 36-hole final being played at the The Royal Golf Club in Bahrain.

Each of the PGA's seven regions provides one pair for the final, which is supplemented by the host club's professional and captain and the winners of an international qualifier.
