Simpson In Pole Position

Published in:

Quietly spoken West Berkshire pro Paul Simpson let his clubs do the talking as he scorched into the lead at Moortown with a second successive 67.

The West Berkshire pro goes into the final round of the Glenmuir PGA Professional Championship leading by a shot at six under par from Andrew Barnett (North Wales Driving Range) who put in a rousing finish to card a 69.

Eaglescliffe's Graeme Bell (72) and Mossock Hall's David Shacklady (69) are three strokes further back at two under par in a share of third.

Simpson had equalled his own low score of the week with birdies at the second, fourth, seventh, 12th and 15th holes with just a single dropped shot at the fourth.

"I played much better than yesterday I just need to keep it going but I'm not going to get ahead of myself," he said.

Simpson achieved his score without recourse to his driver other than to use it when marking for relief.

"It's not been behaving so I've left it in the bag to teach it a lesson," said Simpson.

Barnett relied on a hot putter and deadly accurate seven iron to salvage his round after a double bogey on the 13th had threatened to derail him.

"I hit a terrible swing straight left at the 13th in the heather and it was almost unplayable," said Barnett.

"But it was just the kick up the backside that I needed."

Barnett responded by arrowing seven irons to two feet and 10 feet on the 15th and 16th and to 15 foot on the 18th - all for birdies.

Scotland's Craig Ronald charged up the leaderboard with a 68 and sits alongside Duncan Muscroft whose 69 left him at one under par for the tournament and tied fifth.

Jeremy Robinson (Sports Masters International) is level for the tournament after a 73 while Paul Wesselingh (Kedleston Park), Andrew Sherborne (The Kendleshire), William Barnes (RBE Golf) and Craig Shave (Cold Ashby) are tied eighth at one over.

Sean Whiffin slipped backwards to two over par after three bogeys in his last five holes to sign for a 75.

Meanwhile an eagle at the last helped Tracy Loveys (Bigbury) into a share of the lead in the Glenmuir WPGA Professional Championship. She fired a two under par 73 to lie level with Jo Pritchard (Pontypool) whose round included five birdies.

The pair are three clear of Gillian Stewart (Gillian Stewart Golf) in second place.
