Play Abandoned At Moortown

Published in:

Flooding and sustained rainfall has forced the abandonment of play at Moortown on day three of the Glenmuir PGA Professional Championship

Play was suspended during the third round at 12.51pm with greens and fairways rendered unplayable by large puddles and pools of water dotted across the course.

And with no let up in the weather and further heavy rain forecast, tournament director Simon Higginbottom was given no option but to call a halt to proceedings shortly after 3pm.

"Although the rain is not heavy at the moment it is still falling and it has given us no chance to get out there and prepare the course and get it ready," said Higginbottom.

"With further heavy rain forecast for later in the day we haven't really got an option other than to come back tomorrow and conclude the championship."

The players will resume their third rounds at 8am tomorrow with the last group estimated to finish at around 11.30am. A fourth round draw will then be made followed by a two tee start on the 1st and tenth beginning at approximately 1pm.

The first round of the Glenmuir Women's PGA Professional Championship will start at 8am.

Overnight leaders Andrew Barnett (North Wales Driving Range) and Graeme Bell (Eaglescliffe) managed just one hole but it proved profitable with Barnett eagling the par 5 first to move to five under par. Bell also picked up a shot with a birdie.

Duncan Muscroft was among the early movers prior to the delay with three birdies and a bogey in his opening five holes to stand at one under for the championship alongside David Shacklady (Mossock Hall) who birdied the first.

Scotland's Craig Ronald was three under for his round through 10 holes but Andrew Sherborne, who eagled the first, slipped back to one over after bogey, double bogey on the fourth and fifth holes.

Room-mates Cameron Clark (Moor Hall) and William Barnes were paired together, the duo in a share of second place at the start of the round, but Clark immediately gave up shots with successive bogeys and when the claxon sounded had just stuck his tee shot at the third into the rough.

Paul Wesselingh (Kedleston Park) had an eventful first three holes, carding a birdie on the first and double-bogeying the second.

Among the early finishers, Tim Maxwell (Knutsford) and Michael Watson (Wessex Golf Centre) had the pick of the scores with 68 and 69 respectively.

Watson at one stage was four under for his round after an outward 32 but his round hit the buffers as he began to struggle with his irons and bogeyed 10, 13 and 18.
