Eagle Gives Lockie Victory

Published in:

Bill Lockie holed a monstrous 75-foot putt for eagle at the 18th to win the Senior PGA Professional Championship in an enthralling finish at Northamptonshire County Golf Club.

Lockie's three at the 504-yard par five final hole gave him a two-under-par 68 for the round and left him one over par for the tournament to win by a single stroke.

Lockie, from North Gailes in Scotland, had been two shots off the pace overnight and was seemingly out of contention when he reached the turn in 36.

But a dazzling 32 on the way in gave him victory over local Mike Gallagher and Donald Stirling, as well as a cheque for £4,750.

Both Gallagher, of Farthingstone, and Austria-based Stirling had putts on the 18th to force a play-off but both left their 15-foot efforts agonizingly short.

Lockie's round started with a birdie at the par four opening hole but he birdied the 413-yard par four 10th and the 135-yard par three 12th. A bogey at 16 looked to have cost him dear until he hit a huge drive at the last followed by a long wood from the fairway which reached the front of the green.

"I was just thinking 'don't do anything silly,'" Lockie reveled. "I learnt a lot from Bill McColl's putt which was in a similar place and I saw it slow up.

"I couldn't believe it when it dropped."

Lockie continued: "This is a wonderful end to my career - I'm not going to play much tournament golf after this.

"This is my career major. It's my first British title. I lost a play-off here in 2003 and thought my chance had gone.

"To do this at 60 is wonderful."

Stirling was disappointed to lose out but reveled he would be back next year to try and reclaim his crown.

"It was a good competition and I've had four top-four finishes so I can't complain.

"Congratulations to Bill. I made a mess of the last after a good drive. I needed to get up in two but I hit the tree and then I've hit a poor putt."

Phil Harrison of Wildwood Country Club finished fourth on three over par after a 68.

He said: "I hit more fairways today. I've not driven well all week. You can play the course from the fairways but you struggle from that damp rough.

"I played well. I'm very happy with top five but it could have been better.

"I three-putted 14 and I was unlucky to clip the bunker on 17."
