Harvey Holds Back On Expectations

Published in:

Scotland's Garry Harvey is trying to keep his expectations in check ahead of the Senior PGA Professional Championships next week despite him finishing runner-up last year.

Harvey, from Kinross Golf Club, was joint-second at Northamptonshire County - five strokes behind winner Donald Stirling.

However, had it not been for a couple of errors in the final round the result could have been much closer.

But despite the tournament being on the same course Harvey is playing down his chances.

"I suppose last year was a good performance. I had one disaster towards the end of the round and that put me back into a tie for second because I was quite close to Donald Stirling," he said.

"But I don't have any expectations. I'll just go out there and try to do my best, just like most other guys.

"I didn't play very well in the recent Northern Open at Spey Valley - I missed the cut so I'll have to go and practice my putting.

"But if I finish second again I'll be delighted. It would be a bonus."

After his experience in the Northern Open the 53-year-old is looking forward to being on a par with his fellow competitors - at least in terms of distance.

"The standard is quite good (among the seniors) but we don't hit the ball as far as these young chaps - I was playing with a guy at Spey and he hit it miles," he added. "This tournament levels things up somewhat."

Inverness Golf Club's Alistair Thomson returns to the event after an absence but admitted he was persuaded to enter for other reasons than golf.

"I haven't been playing that much and haven't played competitively for two or three years but I thought I would go and play again," said Thomson, who celebrates his 59th birthday on Saturday.

"To be honest, my daughter lives 15 minutes away in Rugby and so we took the opportunity to go and stay with her and play in this.

"I don't take it too seriously. I'll take it how it comes but it will be nice to get away from the shop."

Stirling returns to defend his title in the £30,000 event from May 28 to 30 at Northants County, where the top 20 finishers will qualify for the De Vere PGA Seniors Championship at Slaley Hall.

The leading four players will also get to play in the Weston Homes PGA International Seniors at Stoke by Nayland in September and there is one spot available for the Scottish Seniors Open.
