Ken Revved Up For Seniors Test

Published in:

Northern Ireland-based professional Ken Revie's first objective at this week's Senior PGA Professional Championships is to make the cut, having narrowly missed out last year.

The 51-year-old Scot from Ballymena Golf Club was two shots off qualifying for the third round and he would love to put that right.

He gets his chance when he returns to Northamptonshire County Golf Club next Wednesday (28 May).

"I played in it for the first time last year and it was encouraging," said Revie, who has been at Ballymena since 1991.

"Last year I was two shots off making the cut. I shot rounds of 79 and 77 and I should have done better.

"There are only about a third of the 120-odd players who make the cut so with a couple of 77s I should be able to do that.

"You are playing against fellows who are of a similar age - which gives me a wee bit of a chance.

"But I will go with no expectations, I'll just go and play and see what happens.
"I would like to try to qualify for the final round and maybe make the top 20."

Revie is a fan of the Northants lay-out, although he expects it to play differently from 12 months ago.

"It was very fiery. We had six great weeks of weather and it was almost playing like a links course," he said. "It is only a par-70 course but it is testing."

Bandon Golf Club professional Paddy O'Boyle is relishing the prospect of returning to Northants County.

"I am looking forward to it. I view it a bit like the Olympics in that is more for the camaraderie," said the 1996 PGA captain.

"It also gives you the chance to play with pros of your own age. Some of them are very good players but if you play well you have got a chance.

"I won't be going just for the social side, I want to be competitive as well - but even if you aren't you meet new friends."

The 52-year-old added: "I like the course. Last year they were a bit unlucky as there was a very dry spell and the ground was a little bit bouncy but the golf course itself was perfect."

Donald Stirling returns to defend his title in the £30,000 event from May 28 to 30 at Northants County, where the top 20 finishers will qualify for the De Vere PGA Seniors Championship at Slaley Hall.

The leading four players will also get to play in the Weston Homes PGA International Seniors at Stoke by Nayland in September and there is one spot available for the Scottish Seniors Open.
