Levermore Ready To Attack From The Off

Published in:

Essex golfer Jason Levermore has never previously played in Wales, never mind the specific course which hosts this month's Ryder Cup Wales 2010 Welsh Open Young PGA Professional Championship, but that will not stop him attacking from the start.

The 28-year-old has a positive approach to tournament play and being unfamiliar with Bull Bay in Anglesey will not deter him from trying to shoot low.

A 36-hole event does not leave much room for manouvre should anything go wrong in your opening round but that is not the way Levermore sees it.

"It has all been a bit quiet over the winter and I just can't wait for the season to start," said the Clacton Golf Club professional, who hopes to play full-time this season but will spread his events between the regional Order of Merit, PGA Europro, Challenge Tour and Asian Tour.

"But I don't think there is any point in being protective. I am just going to play as I would any 18-hole competition.

"I'm going for a win and I don't really hold back on anything. Once you start getting protective and start playing away from bits and pieces of trouble you are playing negative golf."

Levermore's father Stuart has been head pro at Clacton for 30 years and with professional golf running through the family it is little surprise Jason found himself playing for a living.

"Dad's older brother was a pro, my dad's dad was a golf pro so I suppose it was in my genes that I was always going to play," he added.

"I have learned a lot from my dad to be honest. He watched me as I grew up and any problems I get with my swing I see him.

"If I am hitting it badly while I am away I can ring him up for a chat to fix it over the phone."

Cardiff's Adam Constable will defend the title he was won for the last two years on April 24 and 25, although it will be on a different course to his previous wins.
Essex will also be represented by Rayleigh Golf Range's Mark Hooper, who after some warm weather practice in Spain is hoping for favourable conditions on the west coast.

"My game is really well at the moment. I've been working really hard and I'm looking forward to going as I've never played in Wales before," said the 23-year-old, who has been at Rayleigh for four years.

"It is quite a nice event to play in as we start to build up to the summer.
"It is a good field and I figure there will be some good players from all over the country playing in it.

"I went to Spain in the winter and that was good practice but when I came home it has been pro-ams in bad weather - hopefully we will get some good weather for the tournament."

Hooper, who has already won pro-ams in Felixstowe and Prince's in Kent, added: "I am feeling really confident and the trip to Spain helped as it was absolutely perfect weather - it is nice to hit balls when there isn't a gale blowing."

The tournament is the first on the national schedule and benefits from the support of Ryder Cup Wales 2010 Ltd.

Chief executive Rob Holt said: "This tournament is the first event in our 2008 Summer of Golf programme which provides a great opportunity to put Anglesey on the map and to showcase the surrounding area of North Wales.

"Golf clubs up and down the country are benefiting from hosting such events which contribute greatly to Wales' growing profile as an international golfing and tourism destination."
